Important Information

  • Blood glucose (BG) tests tell us how the insulin is working.
  • Target range for BG is 70-120 mg/dL.
  • BG must be tested at least 4 times/day (before meals and at bedtime).
  • Extra tests should be done if you don’t feel right or you are about to exercise.
  • In growing children, the amount of insulin that is needed is constantly changing.
  • Tracking BG numbers tells you whether your insulin dose is working to "keep you in target." THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.
  • Write down your BG numbers on a daily basis and make sure to look for patterns in your BG numbers every few days.
  • Teenagers should keep their own logs, but it is still very important to review the numbers with a parent every week in case changes need to be made.

General Information

A very important part of taking care of your diabetes is testing your blood sugar.  Blood sugar numbers tell how well you are managing your diabetes on an everyday basis and they help you to figure out how much insulin you need.

Reasons to Test More Frequently

  • Not feeling right (your blood sugar might be high or low)
  • Going to exercise
  • Going to swim
  • Sick day
  • Going to drive a car
  • Your diabetes team suggests extra tests
